Among recent lunar orbiters, only the Chinese Chang?ˉE-1 (CE-1) was equipped with
passive microwave radiometer (MRM) to measure the natural microwave emission
from the lunar surface. This microwave emission, characterized by brightness
temperature (TB), is predominantly related to the physical temperature and dielectric
properties of the lunar surface. Through the knowledge of brightness temperature,
detail thermal behavior and properties of the lunar surface, important factors in the
design of thermal shield for lunar module/rover, as well as site selection for manned
landing and future lunar base, can be retrieved. Here we present the first microwave
map of the Moon constructed from the CE-1?ˉs microwave brightness temperature data
with special attention to the effect of lunar local time through the use of hour angle.
With this processing technique to eliminate the distortion due to mixing spatial and
temporal effects in the CE-1 data, we are able to reveal detailed regional fine
structures unobserved previously at any lunar local time with unmatched sharpness.
The microwave maps presented here will provide scientists with a new window to
study the lunar surface independent of solar illumination, as well as a useful tool to
probe the physical and geological properties of the sub-surface regolith layer.
